A laser generates a series of high intensity pulses rather than a continuous beam of light. Each pulse contains 500 mJ of energy and lasts 10 ns. (laser fires 10 pulses/second).
a) What is the peak power of the laser light? (power output during one of the 10 ns pulses)
b) What is the average power output of the laser? (energy/s)
c) A lens focuses the laser beam to a 10 um diameter circle on a target. During a pulse, what is the light intensity on the target?
d) The intensity of sunlight midday is about 1100 W/m^2. What is the ratio of the laser intensity on the target to the intensity of the midday sun.
(a) The average peak power (which is equal to the peak power if the pulse is a perfect square wave) is given by:
500*10^-3 J/10*10^-9 sec = 5 * 10^7 W
(b) There are ten 500 mJ pulses per second, so in one second, 5000 mJ = 5 J of energy is emitted. 5 J/s = 5 W.
(c) The area of a 10 micron circle is pi*(5*10^-6 m)^2 = 1.571*10^-5 m^2. The irradiance, or intensity, of the laser light during the pulse is given by the power divided by the area over which that power is distributed:
I = 5 * 10^7 W / 1.571*10^-5 m = 6.366*10^17 W/m^2
(d) The ratio of laser intensity to solar irradiance is simply:
6.366*10^17 W/m^2 / 1100 W/m^2 = 5.787*10^14
