Can I vary laser intensity? (DVD laser pointers and Potentiometers)?


Alright, I'm making a burning laser pointer and I have all the components for a driver and I also have a diode ready. BUT i was wondering if I could perhaps attach a potentiometer to the circuit possibly from the positive battery terminal to the LM317 to vary the laser's intensity... I'd appreciate any info you could give me on attaching something of the sort. If you'd like to see the driver, then here's the tutorial I'm using...

The LM317 requires a specific voltage to operate. Go under that and it stops functioning correctly. And besides, it's a voltage regulator, it's function is keep voltage output the same. Put in 9V it outputs 1.2V, put in 5V it outputs 1.2V. So your potentiometer wouldn't do anything. There is, however, a voltage output adjustment pin that you can connect a potentiometer to. See the parts spec below for more info on that. I don't know how that will affect the lasers operation though. I'd have to see a spec on it. Operating the laser at the wrong voltage could be bad for it.

By determining the characteristics of the 980nm, 1480nm 1550nm laser sources and ASE (amplified spontaneous emission) at the output of the amplifier used to determine the gain and noise figure of EDFA. In this book, the design of InGaN LDs structures including multi quantum wells (MQWs) active region device are described and investigated by integrated system engineering technology computer aided design (ISE TCAD) device simulator. The parameters of the LDs structures are varied and optimized for high performance.
