Laser Diode 150mw

Electronics Circuit Question-------How to prevent VOLTAGE SPIKES and get CONSTANT CURRENT in a circuit?

I have a very sensitive laser diode that will be run on about 150mw and 200ma. I plan to run it on a rechargable AAA battery. To step the current down to a useable level, I plan to put a 3.75 to 4 Ohm resistor in series. There will be a switch that turns it on when pressed leading to the possibility to an increase in voltage or current.

HOW DO I AVOID THESE SPIKES with a electrical component(capacitor, inductor, ect) that will fit in the same size diameter as the AAA battery (about 10mm)? What size component would work in a circuit with a 850mah, 1.2v battery, and the 3.75(to 4) ohm resistor, and would it be in series or parallel.
What component would I add, and in which place, and in series or parallel
Can not be very big also. A 2200mf is way too big to fit in the same space as the AAA battery

There is a tendency to try to make circuits simple. However this has it's drawbacks. Laser diodes are rather fussy. The "junction" or main light-emitting working part of a typical laser diode is about the size of a bacterium and can overheat within a microsecond if its limits are exceeded. Furthermore, the minimum current to achieve laser operation ("laser threshold") can easily be near or over 80 percent of the "fatal dose" of current. Most diode laser modules have feedback systems based on the photodiode included in the laser diode to stabilize beam output. The feedback system must be free of overshoots, even during power-up and power-down.

Mitsubishi to Launch 1st Passenger Jet, 640nm 150mw Cw Laser Diode

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries will make one step forward to achieve its goal of launching the first passenger jet built in Japan when it exposes a carbon copy of the cabin at the upcoming Paris Air Show.

According to a company official, the full-size copy will be utilized to evaluate the demand for the small-size passenger aircraft before the huge Japanese manufacturer decides whether to turn the project into a full commercial venture or not.

At least 70 to 90 people can be accommodated by the jet which is being developed in lieu of the government's project that is the New Energy and Industrial Development Organization. The official further said that the Mitsubishi Regional Jet would be the first ever Japanese jet.

The YS-11 is Japan’s turboprop plane which was the only Japanese airliner produced since World War II. In 1974, its production stopped. And the official said that the Mitsubishi plane would consume almost 20 per cent less fuel than existing jets of similar size.

He added that Mitsubishi plans to acquire engines from these three options: General Electric, Rolls Royce, or Pratt and Whitney. That is if the project goes ahead. The jet plane will measure 35.8 meters or 117.5 feet in length, and 10.0 meters or 32.8 feet in height. It will come with a wingspan that will measure 30.9 meters or 101.4 feet.

The company’s target is to minimize the negative environmental impacts of the plane as well as to increase seating comfort through the use of new design methods and materials. Mitsubishi will also utilize technologies that would lessen fuel consumption and operating costs, and will need another year to decide whether to commercialize the plane or not.

The official said that airliner might be commercially available by 2012, if the company decides to proceed.

Another car maker, Honda, is currently developing a light business jet. Through a joint venture with US-based Piper Aircraft, the company targets to start production somewhere in the United States in 2010.

Meanwhile, Mitsubishi Electric Corp has built the ML520G51 high output red laser diode. It is asserted to have highest optical output standard all over the world with 150mW at 640nm, and will be used in mobile projectors, laser show devices, and other applications in the industrial and medical fields.

Extensively used in applications such as optical communications and optical disc systems like DVD, laser diodes are also noted suitable for new applications like mobile projectors and laser shows. Mitsubishi Electric produces 660nm high power laser diodes that made them the major supplier of high-power red laser diodes for recordable DVD. The human eyes perceive red laser diode as bright in color.

Red laser diode has the capability to express the deep reds at 640nm. Furthermore, it can also produce an output of 150mW – considered as the highest output in the world for a 5.6mm diameter TO-CAN.

With a wall-plug efficiency of 23 percent, the ML520G51 is capable of producing output of 150mW within -5°C and +45°C. In effect, there is an assured lesser device power consumption and longer usage time with battery-driven mobile devices.
