How is a laser beam expander different from a telescope?

Laser beam expander = laser [beam] collimator

The collimator picture at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collimated_light shows that the light before the collimator can come from from various angles, but still be bent to the horizontal direction.

A telescope would probably only work well for light coming just from the focal point.
