ChemCam rock laser for the Mars Science Laboratory
Uncontrolled fusion in lab?
So we always hear about scientists trying to harness "controlled fusion" for producing energy. But, I am trying to find if any research team has ever succeeded in igniting any kind of fusion at all (even uncontrolled fusion!).
Can anyone answer this question?
Note: this is not a homework problem. See link below.
http://www.cnn.com/2010/TECH/science/04/28/laser.fusion.nif/index.html?hpt=C1
Thermonuclear bombs!!
Never heard of them doing it.
They say "if all goes well" what if all does not go well and this gets out of control? Some day these folks are going to create a monster that they can't contain.
If all goes well, the resulting reaction will be hotter than the center of the sun (more than 100 million degrees Celsius) and will exert more pressure than 100 billion atmospheres. This will smash the hydrogen isotopes together with so much force and heat that their nuclei will fuse, sending off energy and neutrons.
