(b) All of its output energy is absorbed in a detector that measures a total energy of 0.47 J over a period of 21 sec. How many photons per second are being emitted by the laser?
I guess the main problem is I don't understand how you possibly use photons as a conversion factor... is there just like an easy conversion I can do?
oh sorry. Part a is not the hard part. I really just need help with part b- the one about calculating photons/s.
Quantum mehanics tells us that the energy in light comes in discrete 'bits' (photons) and the energy of a photon only depends on its wavelength. There is a formula that relates the energy of a photon to its wavelength, E=hc/λ where h is plank's constant, c is the speed of light and λ is the wavelength Since you know the wave length, and you know that 0.41J over 21 seconds = 0.0195 J/S, you can find the aproximate avergage number of photons per second.

Red and Near Infrared Microcavity LightEmitting Diodes $196.21 Lighting is essential to modern society but it accounts for nearly 20 of the electrical energy usage. Thus efforts to increase the conversion efficiencies of light sources are attracting more and more attention. Potential high efficiency light sources are fluorescent lamps or lightemitting diodes (LEDs). Modern LEDs show internal quantum efficiencies of virtually 100 . However, in the case of standard LEDs most of this light is trapped inside the device because of total internal reflection at the interface semiconductorair. Several methods have been developed in order to increase the extraction efficiency.
