InfraRed camera?!?
Is it really illegal to have an IR camera? I've been looking for one in some local stores, but they say it is imported only for military purposes
Like someone said, it's legal in the US. Most companies don't sell them because they're afraid of being sued if someone abuses them. Sony makes camcorders that will see near infrared. Fujifilm makes a couple of cameras that will see near infrared. The stores probably just told you they're illegal because they couldn't think of a better excuse for not having them. If you decide to get one, I'd highly recommend buying an infrared flashlight.

FLIR thermal infrared: the camera itself, + more demos
What is the expected lifespan of an INFRARED Surveillance camera ?
Infrared Surveillance are of different models and brands but I could not get data on the expected lifespan of a camera that has Infrared capabilities.
I've had one running non-stop for about 2 years. The infrared bulbs are LED's so they should last a really long time but I'm not sure about the camera. Plus it only cost me about $30 on ebay so I would say it was a good buy.
