Can you overcharge a battery?

I took apart an old toothbrush (Electric) and saw that the means of recharge was simply an inductor coil. So it charges via an electromagnetic field.

The battery inside is a rechargeable AA battery. So is it possible I could overcharge the battery if I hooked up the inductor coil straight to the battery?

It doesnt output allot of power. It doesnt specify, but it was enough to light a small LED, but not spin a small motor.

Does the battery just stop recharging or what?

yes, batteries can be overcharged.

In the toothbrush, there should be a little circuit board. This board has a powersuppply as well as the charging circuit. The charging circuit should be a "smart charger" which is supposed to prevent over charging.

What does happen, batteries get old, NiCd cells fail due to the abuse of charge, discharge and recharge without cycling correctly.

The coil inside the base is the primary of the power supply transformer, the coil in the toothbrush side is the secondary. Move the secondary into the field of the primary and you get electron flow... a split transformer.

1. Z (impedance) of an inductor = j2(pi)(f)L

2. Z of a capacitor = 1/(j2(pi)(f)C).

3. Set Z capacitor equal to Z inductor and solve for f. But this time, add '2' (without a j) to the impedance of the inductor.

4. Use circuit analysis using the Z's given above. The phase angle is calculated as follows.

Ztotal = a+Bj
phase angle = arctan(B/a). Make sure the angle corresponds to the quadrant a and B are referring to.
