How does a zener diode work?
Lets say I want to take 5v down to 3.3 (or 3v). Do they take away the specified voltage or allow only the specified voltage to pass through.
So... would I need a 2v zener diode to take away those 2v of power with an end result of 3v.... or do I need a 3.3v (1w) zener diode to only allow up to 3.3v of power through the 5v circuit ?
Also, can they be used in-line without any type of resister as long as the wattage level is high enough? And... can I use one on an alternating current -- like for an alternating speed comp fan?
Zener diodes are like any other diode. They conduct current in only one direction. But they differ in that when reversed biased, they do not conduct until a certain point where they "break down" and start to conduct. The point at which they break down is their zener voltage. They will hold this breakdown voltage until they are destroyed by overcurrent conditions.
They will always require a series resistance or be immediately destroyed through overcurrent.
They are doped in certain ways to give you the different voltages. How much current they can pass gives you their wattage.
They also need to be filtered with a capacitor in parallel with the zener, as they can be a bit noisy.
