Why do rectifier diodes in power supplies have small capacitors fitted across them?
A)To increase the working voltage
B)To increase the rated current

They released five albums: Diodes (1977), Released (1979), ActionReaction (1980), Survivors (1982), and Time/Damage Live 1978 (2010). One of the first Toronto bands playing that style of music, The Diodes helped foster the scene in the city. Along with manager Ralph Alfonso, The Diodes opened the first Canadian punk nightclub in 1977, called Crash n Burn, where many of the citys punk bands at that time played. Diode and Rectifier Help?!?
I'm building a solar charger in which I have to rectify two separate sets of solar cells. One cluster has a higher voltage but a lower current, and the other has a higher current and a lower voltage. If I were to hook them in a series, it is my understanding that power could flow the wrong way due to the difference. My question is what kind of rectification do I need. I know that with AC current I would have to make or buy a bridge rectifier, but since this is DC current is it as simple as just hooking up a diode in line with the wires? Help please.
solar cells are DC, there is no need for rectification.
You do need a single diode in series if you put them in series. Sometimes a diode is already inside one of the panels, you should check your documentation.
If not, add one diode, with enough current rating to handle the highest current either one could deliver, and a reverse voltage rating higher than either one could deliver. In practice, a 1N4003 rated at 200 volts and 1 amp would work. Put the diode in series with either panel.
