High Power Diodes Simple high voltage power supply?
Using just transformers, capacitors and diodes available at radioshack. Any help please. Need to be 1kv-10kv. New to electronics, trying to figure this out, small budget.
Get the highest voltage transformer you can get. Then get diodes rated at least 3x that voltage, and caps equal to 1.5x that voltage.
You can use a voltage multiplier to step the voltage up further if needed.
If you have a 5KV transformer, one diode and cap will get you about 7000 volts DC or a bit less. Adding additional diodes and caps will get you an addtionall 7kv for each.

Now all the above is for low current. It you need substantial amounts of current, then different techniques must be used.

Lighting is essential to modern society but it accounts for nearly 20 of the electrical energy usage. what could cause a Schottky diode forward V drop too high (>2V with Vin~15V)?
The situation was that when measuring a Schottky diode along, the forward V drop was normal. While mounting the same device on a test board (a power supply), the forward V drop ~2V.
normally the Vf is specified for a specific pass or bias current. what in your test setup did you use to set the current through the device? at higher than normal junction temperature, the Vf will increase. without any heat sinking, the junction temperature responds to the pass current and that may have been the issue with your test proceedure. a very hot diode.
