Laser Pointer Applications
When most people talk about Laser Pointers, they are referring to either making a business presentation or teasing their pet.
Ideas of other uses for laser pointers are realized in the world of real estate and home inspections addressing points of interest from a distance such as: mold, cracks, or any other flaws, or even positive features that are out of reach.
Assuming that a major population of people average up to about six feet tall, a real estate agent, or an inspector performing a walk through inspection, or presentation of a home, or building with ten feet tall ceilings. A professional looking, compact laser pointer would sure come in handy.
Take a look at www.laserpointeronline.com where you can find a wide variety of laser pointers including Green Laser Pointers, which are popular for their high visibility even in "broad daylight" conditions.
As a real estate agent myself in an area that some would consider remote, I am constantly investigating boundaries of large parcels of vacant land.
About a year ago, a client of mine wanted to thin some timber from his 50 acre parcel, so he asked me to identify the boundary between his and his neighbor. Being an experienced agent, and wanting to respond with a professional answer, I told him to hire a surveyor. He didn’t like that answer, because surveyors cost money, and all he wanted was “not” to cut his neighbor’s trees down.
Well, I helped him when he bought the land, and we both knew where the property corners were, so I could see his point in just wanting to identify a simple, straight line between two points.
This land is fairly unique in that it wasn’t flat, and that the distance between two points would be over 1000 feet over some rolling hills, and some rough terrain. After some thought, I came up with an idea that actually worked pretty well.
This client was more of a long time friend than anything else, and most of our time together was spent telling hunting stories, which is probably how I came up with this dumb idea. We met on the property the next day, I had a twenty foot stick, and he brought his long range riffle which has a very expensive scope mounted on it. Now I am thinking “line of sight”, so I had him sit at one property corner while I took off toward the next corner with my 20 foot stick, a cell phone and a roll of orange ribbon. The idea worked well, as he looked through the cross-hairs on his scope, sighting past my stick to the bearing tree where the other property corner was, and relay by phone to me where to tie a ribbon.
Now we’ve been friends for a long time, and still are, but when I started walking away to mark the boundary, it took about 5 steps to realize the situation. With chills running up and down my spine, it came to my attention that for the next hour or so, there would be a riffle pointed at me. Thoughts of topics from hunter’s safety class from years ago were like neon lights in my head “MOST FIREARM ACCIDENTS HAPPEN WITH AN EMPTY WEAPON” “ KEEP MUZZLE POINTED IN A SAFE DIRECTION”.
Well, everything went fine that day, the boundary was marked, the correct trees were identified, and the idea worked.
Since that day, I use a green laser pointer, which to say the least is a much more compact, and a much “safer” tool to use for the same end result. With the one I use, you can actually see the projected beam instead of an imaginary line like with a scope, or a transit, or just a dot on the other end.
