Genetically Modified Fish $87.62 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Genetically modified fish has promoters driving an overproduction of all fish growth hormone. This resulted in dramatic growth enhancement in several species, including salmonids, carps and tilapias. These fish have been created for use in the aquaculture industry to increase the speed of development and potentially, reduce fishing pressure on wild stocks. None of these GM fish have yet appeared on the market, mainly due to the concern expressed among the public of the fishs potential negative effect on the ecosystem should they escape from fish farms. The GloFish is a patented brand of genetically modified (GM) fluorescent zebrafish with bright red, green, and orange fluorescent color. Although not originally developed for the ornamental fish trade, it is the first genetically modified animal to become publicly available as a pet. Unlike other frequently prescribed products, Atopica selectively targets certain specific immune cells responsible for the dog's allergic response. Atopica is an oral form of cyclosporine that immediately forms a microemulsion in an aqueous environment. Cyclosporine, the active ingredient in ATOPICA, is a cyclic polypeptide, immune modulating agent consisting of 11 amino acids. It is produced as a metabolite by the fungal species Beauveria nivea. For animal use Product is a modified/microemulsion formulation. Modified Inferior Turbinoplasty (Paperback) $96.73 Humans can resist 40 days without eating and 4 days without drinking, but only 4 minutes without breathing: this tells us much about its fundamental importance. Breathed air is slowed down, filtered, warmed and humidified by the nose; many mechanisms are involved in this act, which prevent bronchial tubes and pulmonary alveolus from receiving an excessive and sudden air load. It is well known, on the other hand, that breathing through the mouth causes a lot of problems: inflammatory diseases of the upper airways, sleep apnea syndrome, but also, in some cases, bronchial, pulmonary and even cardiac disorders, that are more easily affecting patients not able to breathe correctly through the nose. For this reason, restoring an efficient nasal function is a very important - and in some cases crucial - issue. This book describes in details an innovative surgical technique called modified inferior turbinoplasty, which offers an excellent solution to the problems associated with the lower turbinate hypertrophy. A turbinate (or nasal concha) is a long, narrow, curled bone shelf that protrudes into the breathing passage of the nose. Most surgical interventions treat only the soft parts of hypertrophic turbinates using laser therapy, radiofrequency treatment, and electrocoagulation, but these procedures often lead to relapse. With this technique, in contrast, all anatomic parts of the turbinate are treated, including bone tissue: the surgeon reduces the inferior nasal concha and the internal nasal tissue, and the mucosa is then remodeled with sutures. The modified inferior turbinoplasty allows the complete avoidance of swabs in the nose, which is fundamental for patients well-being and grant them a quicker recovery. The book will be very useful for othorinolaryngologists, plastic surgeons, endoscopic and maxillofacial surgeons. |

Re: Modified Green Laser
Bought a 240mW green laser pen: Will it damage my eyes with this "invisible IR light" emitting from it?
I got my 240mW laser pen today (which I know is more around 30mW in green light and yes it's a modified one from china and it has no IR filter, as I bought it by mistake) - but earlier I shone it about 7 times just at the wall and carpet and it didnt reflect into my eyes or anything but like my eyes for about 1 hour afterwards just felt weird, not like painful and its been like 4 hours now and I dont have any changes in vision, im just wondering if shining this laser as it doesnt have an IR filter will damage my eyes and make me blind without me knowing, im really quite concerned though cos yeh i dnt wanna be blind.
Yes, invisible IR light is dangerous to your eyes. In fact, it is probably the most dangerous type of light to your eyes. I would go so far as to say it is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS! Let's start from the beginning. Visible light (green, blue, red, etc) gets focused onto your retina, and if it is too powerful, it can burn your retina. Unfortunately, your retina does not have pain receptors, so you don't 'feel' it burning. Fortunately, your brain has an automatic reflex that when the eye senses to much light (based on brightness), it forces you to blink and look away, minimizing the damage. The light damage threshold for your eye is about 1mW. If you were to stare into 1mW without blinking, it would eventually do damage. But, again, your brain will prevent this from happening (you can over-ride this reflex if you try to). Up to about 5mW, your brain will respond fast enough to prevent any real eye damage. That is why 'safe' laser pointers are kept at or below 5mW. Above 5mW, the damage will happen faster then your brain can react. At 30mW, as you claim your laser is, there would certainly be damage. At 240mW, the damage would be extensive and instantaneous, and permanent. But, everything I have said is for visible light.
Now what about IR light? Well, there are two types of IR light, 'near' and 'far'. Near IR is IR light close to visible in frequency, 'far' is farther away. Far IR light can be a hazard, but let's not worry about that. Near IR, which is what your laser would be producing, has almost exactly the same risk as visible light, in terms of damage thresholds and time it takes to do that damage. But there is one big difference. You have retinal receptors for near IR light, so your brain has no way of knowing you are being hit with it. So, unlike visible light, where your brain will react to protect your eyes at the 1 to 5mW level, there will be no such reflex for IR light. That means, at 1 to 5mW, you will stare happily into it with no indication your retina is burning until you go blind. At 30 mW, there damage will happen very quickly. And at 240mW, not only is the main beam very very very dangerous, but so are weak reflections. And remember, you do not see any of these reflections. The only indication you will have is that you lose vision, possibly permanently.
I am especially worried because your laser is claimed to be 240mW but you claim to only see 30mW. The way these lasers work is that significantly more IR light is created, and then a small amount of it gets converted to green light. So I would not at all be surprised if you see 30mW of green, but the laser outputs 240mW of IR.
So let me put this to you simply. You should be concerned. The IR is extremely dangerous. And I would not be surprised if that weird feeling is related to vision damage. Remember, your retina doesn't feel pain, so you wouldn't expect it to hurt. It sounds like classic minor retinal damage, and I would expect it to heal on its own with no adverse effects. You are lucky you didn't get hit more directly.
The other person who answered this question has NO idea what they are talking about.
