Dumpy Laser
What's the curvature of the the earth over short distances? 50m / 100 meters?
I was trying to work out the accuracy of a laser/ dumpy level verses a water level.
The Laser or Dumpy level work by shooting straight lines.
The water level works by using gravity.
Therefor the the two styles of levels will eventually disagree with one another with the greater the distance measured. So over 50meters, 100meters, 1kilometer what will the difference Between the two styles of levels be? Please answer even if the difference is incredibly small.
I once calculated the curvature to result in an increase in height of 8 inches per mile. It is linear because the angles are so small.
8 inches per mile
0.8 inches in 528 feet
0.08 inches in 53 feet
So, about a tenth of an inch in 67 feet.
0.8 inch is 2 cm
528 feet = 161 m
