Dual Beam Oscilloscope

What could I do with an oscilloscope?

Sitting outside the neighborhood garbage bin near my house is a large machine labeled as a "Type 551 Dual-Beam Oscilloscope". It looks very interesting, but I'm wondering if it's worth it to try to carry it up the stairs into my apartment. What does it do? What interesting things could I use it for? If it's still working, how much is it worth?

You could like at electronic signals, like in a radio, or computer, or television. But without a schematic AND considerable electronic knowledge, they would be meaningless to you. Not to mention that, if reading the WRONG signal you can blow up the television or radio or computer!

Those old Type 551 were popular in television repair shops years ago. Since the new television ara bout 75% digital (and flat screens are 100% digital) the old 551 is close to useless now. Total worth: $0.00

Oscilloscope : An Essential Measuring Instrument

Oscilloscope is an electronic measuring instrument. It is used to observe different kind of waveforms, voltages, harmonic noise and more. Oscilloscope is often known as Cathode Ray Oscilloscope (CRO).

Oscilloscope has a Cathode Ray Tube (CRT), just like older TVs. Waveforms are observed on CRT. CRT is a Transducer that converts electrical signal into visible graphs. Device usually has two inputs X Channel and Y Channel. Such scope is known as Dual Channel Oscilloscope. Certain scopes also have more inputs. More the number of inputs, more waveforms can be seen at same time.

CRO has main part CRT. CRT works on Cathode Ray Beam. A Cathode emits cathode rays, which are nothing but electrons. A controlling circuitry operates CRT. Signal to be observed it directly connected to Vertical Deflection Assembly via set of amplifiers. Vertical Deflection Plates move the Cathode Ray beam horizontally across screen. Similarly, signal is applied as trigger pulse to Horizontal Deflection circuitry. A Sweep or Time Base Generator converts signal into time that is X axis. When both circuits deflect Deflection Plates, beam follows shape of input wave. Screen is coated with Fluorescent material like Phosphor from inside. When beam is incident on it, it illuminates and waveform is observed.

CRT requires very high voltage for its operation. Cathode, also known as Electron Gun requires heating to emit beam of electrons. Hence CRO has a Step Up Transformer or Voltage Amplifying circuit. This energizes the CRT. Other controlling circuit is operated on 12V or 5 V DC supply. Every CRO has a Calibration wave output. It is usually a Square wave of 1 KHz frequency and certain amplitude like 2V (p-p). Calibration is an important process to make sure that device is showing correct readings.

CRO can be of two types Multi Channel and Multi Beam. Multi Channel can have more than 2 inputs, to observe more waves at same time. While, Multi Beam can accept multiple signals and show only one of them. Another kind of Oscilloscope available is Digital Storage Oscilloscope (DSO). It has storage capacity. It can store input waveform in memory. This is very useful to observe complicated waveforms such as Frequency Modulated Wave (FM Wave). Waveform can be Paused and zoomed to find changes.

Frequency Measurement, Phase Measurement, Amplitude Measurement, Distortion Analysis, Noise Analysis and more, are the important applications of an Oscilloscope. Any circuit can be analyzed and bugs can be fixed. Oscilloscope has more importance in communications. Because, visualization of waves is only possible with CRO.

CRO is basic building block for advanced measuring devices like DSO, Spectrum Analyzer, Logic Analyzer, Medical Instruments and more. It is found in electronic labs, institutes, R&D Departments, Communication Vendors, etc. Handheld and Portable Oscilloscopes are available these days to measure signals on the move. They use Thin Film Transistor (TFT) LCD Screen, that's why they are light and thin. Some models can even run on a Battery. Oscilloscope is really helping us to visualize waves and make circuits better.
