Distributed Cognition $82.85 Distributed cognition is a psychological theory developed in the mid 1980s by Edwin Hutchins. Using insights from sociology, cognitive science, and the psychology of Vygotsky (cf activity theory) it emphasizes the social aspects of cognition. A Distributed PI-Calculus (Hardcover) $211.6 Distributed systems are fast becoming the norm in computer science. Formal mathematical models and theories of distributed behavior are needed in order to understand them. This book proposes a distributed pi-calculus called Dpi, for describing the behavior of mobile agents in a distributed world. If the laser is pointed toward a pinhole with a diameter of 1.2 mm, how many photons will travel through the pinhole per second? Assume that the light intensity is equally distributed throughout the entire cross-sectional area of the beam. (1 W = 1 J/s)
We will neglect diffraction effects (since the pinhole diameter is >2000 wavelengths) and use geometric optics.
λ = 532 nm = 5.32x10^-7 m
E/photon = hc/λ = (6.626x10^-34 Js) (2.998x10^8 m/s) / 5.32x10^-7 m
= 3.73x10^-19 J
photon rate through pinhole = (1.2/6.2)^2 (4 W) / 3.73x10^-19 J
