4 diodes in a diamond is usually a diode bridge, also known as a rectifier. It takes the 360° of AC and converts it to 2 180° positive going phases. You'll usually find a capacitor and resistor on the output of the diodes to smooth the output and give you DC with as little ripple as possible.

diodes in circuits and testing them
How can I increase DC voltage in a circuit using diodes and capacitors?
I've heard that there's a way to do this, but I'm not real good with electronics...
If you are starting with DC you will need more than just capacitors and diodes, if you start with AC, a voltage multiplier can be used; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voltage_multiplier
Starting with DC you will have to convert to a pulsating current (pseudo AC) which will require additional components, probably some transistors or an IC oscillator. There are commercial DC to DC converters available ready made.
