zener diode?


what is the equivalent circuit of a zener diode when the input voltage is higher than the zener voltage?? when it is lower ??? what makes a zener diode so special from the other types of diode??

for regular diodes, when reverse biased the diode conducts virtually current. If you make the reverse voltage very large, the diode will eventually fail (i.e. it will be broken).

On the other hand, a zener diode acts like a regular diode when forward biased, but when reverse biased, it acts like a regular diode up until the zener voltage, at which point it conducts current.

Since this reverse breakdown voltage can be controlled via the manufacturing process, you can find zeners with a large range of zener voltages. Among other things, this makes zeners useful for clipping negative voltages.

Can I substitute a Zener diode with a switching diode?


I am building a circuit and accidentaly got a switching instead of Zener diode do i have to exchange them?

no.

the zener diode conducts at the breakover voltage... a switching diode conducts when the voltage exceeds .7v for silicon and .3v for germanium.
