Diode Tunnel
what is the application of tunnel diode?
Many, the same range as of transistor. Even more, since tunnel diode is the fastest semiconductor. With its negative slope and speed it is ideal for fast oscillators and receivers. With its hill it can be used as a memory. However it has a drawback - it cannot be integrated into large integrated circuit like transistors.
Because of that it is left only for special applications. I know they use it in oscilloscope horizontal synchronization to trigger an electron beam by the input signal. Some 30 years ago General Electric published an excellent book (about 700 pages) about tunnel diodes and its applications. I think not much has changed since.

A tunnel diode is a semiconductor device that has negative resistance in a region. In this region, if voltage is increased, current decreases ( contrary to normal diode). Since this characteristic is very "sharp", a tunnel diode is an excellent switching device which can switch at about 5 GHz frequency.
