Diode Test
will a car start if the battery cables have been switched?
i had a dead battery so i bought a new one and everything was good, 2 days later it was dead again so i replaced the alternator and the battery. The bat. had a full charge and the alt tested: diodes passed but the reg. was low, swapped alts again replaced connections to alt prior to installing the new one, and it tested the same:diodes passed reg. low, i am wondering if maybe the bat terminals were switched(bat flip) the second time it was replaced, if it would still turn but the alternator reg output would be low???
If you try to connect the cables backward there will be powerful sparks as the current surges through the alternator. Alternators are often destroyed by that but some cars have fuses to prevent serious damage. Under no condition will any car start with the battery reversed.
You don't mention make, model, and year. Some cars use separate voltage regulators instead of regulators built into the alternator. They aren't terribly common any more but our 1986 Taurus was like that.
