I. Lithonia Lighting

The Lithonia Lighting Company was founded in Lithonia, Georgia in 1946 as a manufacturer of household fixtures. Today, Lithonia Lighting has become one of the forefront companies in designing and manufacturing lighting products to suit commercial, industrial, institutional and residential lighting needs.

In putting efficiency to practice, Lithonia Lighting has made a habit of providing the best value in lighting for over 60 years. It is a subsidiary of Acuity Brands Lighting and has been part of its drive towards excellence in terms of lighting designs and products, and their mission towards green lighting and sustainable building.

Lithonia Lighting sustainable lighting solutions take the form of lighting products that meet green standards and codes, conserve energy and will reduce waste. To recognize Lithonia Lighting dedication to green lighting, they were named the Energy Star Partner of the Year in 2008. The Energy Star logo on their products indicates that meet stringent energy guidelines that support conservation of energy and help protect the environment.

II. New Lighting Products

Lithonia Lighting products reflect its dedication to green lighting and energy saving lights. This goes hand in hand with high performance lights that work to create an ideal visual environment that can suit specific needs.

1. Class Pack

The Class Pack is made to provide a high performance visual experience in a classroom.

A learning and teaching environment requires excellent lighting, but today economy state would require lighting that would not drain the budget. The combination of performance and low cost is made possible by making the Class Pack compatible to regular lighting fixtures, thus reducing installation and labor costs. The energy saving feature also reduces operating costs and its longer lifespan will cut down on maintenance costs for replacing bulbs.

These features also lessens the product impact on the environment, both by lessening the consumption of energy and by lessening waste for disposal by reducing the amount of light bulbs required within a time frame.

The Class Pack offers an ideal lighting environment for a classroom by minimizing glare so as to keep eye strain at a minimum, and by incorporating high-color rendering fluorescent lamps to maintain a vibrant environment. It is also able to provide full light on both the students and the teachers desks while also illuminating the white boards. During Audio-Visual activities, the Class Pack can also be set to reduce lighting on the presentation while still maintaining sufficient light for the students. It is also capable of taking advantage of natural light through daylight harvesting.

2. The Z Strip

The Z Strip is a strip light with an added touch of innovation.

The Z Strip makes low installation and labor costs possible by incorporating easy installation designs. It comes with an easy-open carton and is designed to minimize installation fuss. It comes with a patented Ã…â€Å"rock and lock channel cover that makes it very easy to install. It also does not have a quarter-turn fastener that can be dropped or lost, and the three point aligner locks in place for easy row mounting. The Z Strip is also designed to eliminate the pinched wires under the channel cover.

The ease in installation and reduced labor costs coupled with high performance makes the Z strip ideal for commercial and modern industrial lighting.

III. Commitment to Green Lighting

In their dedication to green lighting, Lithonia Lighting has designed and manufactured products that incorporate the benefits of low energy consumption and other features that reduce impact on the environment.

These green lighting features usually focus on reducing energy consumption (and thus energy costs) and reducing the wastage produced by short lighting life spans that increase discarded bulbs, fixtures and lamps.

To demonstrate the combination of performance and sustainability, we have the Electronic Ballast Calculator, the Pulse Start, and the Kilowatch System.

Electronic Ballast Calculator

An electronic ballast is a device that is meant to limit the amount of current that goes through a circuit. In the case of a lighting circuit, it will work to either dim or brighten the lights. Since electronic components have less power loss than components used in conventional ballasts, the electronic ballast is more efficient and effective at the same time.

A conventional ballast typical energy loss has been measured at 50 to 60 watts for 320 to 400 watt systems. This would cause the rise of energy costs.

Electronic Ballasts also encourage higher lumen output which means that less fixtures will be required to give the ideal amount of light within an area which translates to a lower cost of ownership. There would be fewer lamps which means less energy consumption, less lamps to replace and also less to maintain, creating an ideal lighting system.

Electronic ballasts would also be flicker free, unlike magnetic ballasts which experience flickering due to a less stable arc stream caused by lower operating frequency. It is also silent, with its audio output well over 100 Khz and well beyond the human ears ability to pick up.

The Pulse Start

A Pulse Start is a feature that is incorporated in appropriate Lithonia Lighting products. It is a modification in the lamp and ballast construction that will allow the lamps to start using a high voltage igniter. This will result in longer lamp life, superior vibrancy and color rendition, better lumen maintenance, colder start temperature, faster warm up time and reduced tubal blackening.

The Kilowatch System

The Kilowatch System is a system that is meant to reduce the consumption of energy by having a system that is designed to provide light when you need it and save energy when you don't.

The ability to control lighting is a tremendous opportunity for saving energy without sacrificing lighting efficiency and visual performance which are key elements for any productive environment. This is because many environments are only occupied during certain times of the day, but lights are often left on which drives up energy and maintenance costs. This is due to the lack of efficient lighting systems.

With lighting systems in place, lights can be separated into zones which can be controlled by separate switches and controls. This means that the option of turning off certain zones that aren't in use while keeping occupied zones lit is available, instead of having just one or two master switches for a whole floor. These lighting systems can also be programmed to incorporate lighting sensors which can automatically detect whether a room or a zone is occupied or not and respond accordingly. Timers can also be put in place to program lighting zones to go on or off on certain times of the day.

Lighting systems can also be programmed to suit the lighting needs of a given area or building. Every space has a specific use which means that every space would have a specific lighting need. To fit an area with the wrong kind of lights would result in unhealthy working environments and high energy consumption. Lighting systems would provide enough flexibility to allow for changes and to incorporate lighting needs within given situations.

The ability to control your lights means the ability to take control of energy costs, considering that lighting takes up 44% of energy costs in most buildings. This form of sustainable design in the form of lighting has significantly cut down electricity costs without sacrificing performance lighting for the environment.

IV. LED Lighting

LEDs or Light Emitting Diodes is fast becoming the considered solution for saving energy in urban areas. Because of its numerous advantages in terms of cutting back on energy consumption and its significant lack of emissions in the form of greenhouse gases and other toxic substances, Lithonia Lighting has been incorporating LEDs in its lighting designs.

LED lamps are considerably long lived. An average LED lamp would remain functional at 100% usage for 11 years, or 22 years at 50% use. It has the advantage of not requiring a filament to function, which would burn out, making LEDs last much longer than its incandescent contemporaries. This would practically eliminate the need for lamp replacements, making LED lamps a great investment. Thus, while lighting solutions that incorporate LEDs might initially be more expensive, in terms of maintenance and energy consumption the actual cost for choosing LED would be a lot lower.

LED lighting is also very durable. It does not require a filament to function, and it is not encased in a fragile tube. LEDs are also resistant to heat, cold, and shock, making it perfect for exterior or outdoor lighting.

LEDs also do not contain or emit potentially harmful gases or chemicals, and it contains zero mercury. This makes LEDs very safe for the environment.

An example of a Lithonia Lighting product that makes use of LEDs would be its breakthrough outdoor lighting system, the ALX LED Luminaire.

ALX LED Luminaire

The ALX is a whole family of lighting products that make use of LEDs and are designed to be a solution to outdoor lighting. It has significant energy savings, extended life system, and features improved illumination when compared to its contemporaries.

Besides incorporating LED technology, the ALX family also features outdoor photocontrols (designed by Sensor Switch) that can respond to daylight levels and will then adjust the settings of the luminaire accordingly. It also has the ROAM Smart Wireless Photocontrols which will allow for ease of configuration and control of outdoor lighting without having to visit each lamp.

The ALX LED Luminaire was also designed in such a way that it can be retrofitted to most existing poles, and the luminaire can also replace existing HID luminaires. This feature can offer great savings in labor and maintenance costs.
