Diode Silicone
Directly heated pentodes?
Hi, i got some submini pentodes(CK512AX) from ebay. they have a directly heated cathode(the filament IS the cathode).
the heater voltage is 0.625.
i wanna use this in a cathode bias configuration.
Where do i connect the cathode resistor(which side of the filament?
say i connected to the negative filament, could i use a silicon diode to supply the voltage(ie. connect it in series with a resistor and a seperate heater battery so that the diode developed a 0.7v volt drop which i could wire the heater directly across)?
a) either side is ok, unless your bias voltage is low, on the order of 1 volt. In this case you can use the negative filament lead, and the average cathode voltage will be 0.312 volts higher than that of the negative lead.
b) diode voltages tend to vary a lot, specially with temperature. You are better off using a 1.5 volt battery and a resistor. This will be the most efficient use of the battery, since all the current from the battery is used to heat the filament.
