High Speed End Milling of Single Crystal Silicon Wafer

High Speed End Milling of Single Crystal Silicon Wafer

$113.11

Machining of silicon is a big challenge and expensive affair because of its inherent brittleness which is a major limitation on machining brittle material as the process of removing the material can generate subsurface damage. This project aimed at machining silicon by high speed endmilling using diamond coated tools under ductile regime machining. However, to machine the brittle material in a ductile mode machining required a certain condition and parameters which can be achieved. In this research, high speed end milling of silicon is introduced as a potential machining technique to facilitate ductile mode machining. Influence of three cutting parameters which are spindle speed, axial depth of cut and feed is analyzed. 3level full factorials were used to study the end milling conditions that could give the operation in ductile Author: Amin, A. High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles In cooking, a wafer is a crisp, often sweet, very thin, flat, and dry cake, often used to decorate ice cream. Wafers can also be made into cookies with cream flavoring sandwiched between them. They frequently have a waffle surface pattern but may also be patterned with insignia of the foods manufacturer or may be patternless. Many chocolate bars that people eat have wafers in them such as: Kit Kat and Coffee Crisp. The word also refers to the special small round flatbreads made for Anglican Holy Communion services; the word host is used in the Roman Catholic liturgy. These holy wafers often have an image of the crucified Christ imprinted on them. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F. Wafer Testing

Wafer Testing

$54.86

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Wafer testing is a step performed during semiconductor device fabrication. During this step, performed before a wafer is sent to die preparation, all individual integrated circuits that are present on the wafer are tested for functional defects by applying special test patterns to them. The wafer testing is performed by a piece of test equipment called a wafer prober. The process of wafer testing can be referred to in several ways: Wafer Sort (WS), Wafer Final Test (WFT), Electronic Die Sort (EDS) and Circuit Probe (CP) are probably the most common. Physics and Technology of Amorphous-crystalline Heterostructure Silicon Solar Cells (Hardcover)

Physics and Technology of Amorphous-crystalline Heterostructure Silicon Solar Cells (Hardcover)

$422.56

The challenge of developing photovoltaic (PV) technology to a cost-competitive alternative for established energy sources can be achieved using simple, high-throughput mass-production compatible processes. Issues to be addressed for large scale PV deployment in large power plants or in building integrated applications are enhancing the performance of solar energy systems by increasing solar cell efficiency, using low amounts of materials which are durable, stable, and abundant on earth, and reducing manufacturing and installation cost. Today`s solar cell multi-GW market is dominated by crystalline silicon (c-Si) wafer technology, however new cell concepts are entering the market. One very promising solar cell design to answer these needs is the silicon hetero-junction solar cell, of which the emitter and back surface field are basically produced by a low temperature growth of ultra-thin layers of amorphous silicon. In this design, amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) constitutes both "emitter" and "base-contact/back surface field" on both sides of a thin crystalline silicon wafer-base (c-Si) where the photogenerated electrons and holes are generated; at the same time, a Si:H passivates the c-Si surface. Recently, cell efficiencies above 23% have been demonstrated for such solar cells. In this book, the editors present an overview of the state-of-the-art in physics and technology of amorphous-crystalline heterostructure silicon solar cells.

LEDs in the United Kingdom Provide Cheap and Sensible Light

Of course, it would be nice to light our homes while simultaneously being kind to the environment by using renewable energy, right?  Unfortunately, those pesky fluorescents and LED bulbs are just too pricey.  In the United Kingdom, however, researchers are on the verge of rendering that argument moot.

Light emitting diodes (LEDs) do not work like conventional bulbs containing filaments or even like fluorescent lamps or incandescent bulbs.  LEDs are manufactured from gallium nitride (GaN) attached to another substance.  What was problematic, was that GaN shrank much faster than the silicon to which it was attached as it cooled, thus cracking the substance and making it useless right from the start.  One solution was to attach the GaN to sapphire, which shrinks at the same rate.  It doesn't take much imagination, though, to quickly realize how incredibly expensive this would become.  These obstacles have kept LEDs out of homes and businesses, but research in the UK is quickly tackling these barriers.

A team at the University of Cambridge that including layers of aluminum gallium nitride in the LED would cause the material to shrink at a much slower rate.  As mentioned, pure GaN shrinks much too quickly as it cools, but the introduction of aluminum slows the process.  The researchers were also thrilled to see that their design worked just as well as other LED designs even with the added layers.  And best of all, the compound is easily grown to silicon.  Numerous electronics operate in conjunction with silicon, so the technology has already been developed and perfected over the years, providing a much easier and cost-effective route to LED-silicon designs.

Because aluminum and silicon are abundant and relatively inexpensive, one wafer costs only $15.  150,000 LEDs can be produced from one 15 cm wafer, so the cost is kept to a minimum.  This greatly reduces the price gap between conventional bulbs, fluorescent bulbs, and LEDs.  In fact, each LED bulb will only cost £2 and carry a lifespan of nearly 60 years.  Sweetening the pot is the fact that LED lights fully illuminate instantly, unlike the current bulbs utilizing renewable energy.

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council funded these bulbs and hopes that lighting bills could be cut by three-quarters.  In the United Kingdom, eco-friendly renewable energy has faced some criticism because of some amount of waste products due to renewable often working in conjunction with conventional, fossil fuel-powered methods.  Because these LED bulbs contain no mercury, critics' minds can be put at ease, since the little light producers can be thrown away with little effect to the environment.

Just as in numerous other renewable energy industries, the United Kingdom hopes to promote and proliferate LEDs as the next, and best, method of lighting homes and offices.
