1)Faster, so switching loss is lower. Trr (reverse recovery time is shorter)
2)Vf is lower so loss are lower during conduction as Ploss=VfxI. Vf of maybe 0.3V ? iso 0.7V.

A type of diode I can buy at RadioShack. Will a plain silicon diode work, or will the voltage drop be too great. What about a rectifier diode?

If the frequency is not above a few dozen kilohertz, worry only about the current and voltage rating of the diode. If this is small signal under 100kHz and 40mA, I think Radio Shack carries the good ol' 1N914. If you need to go to an amp, 1N4001 (25V) to 1N4007 (1000V). I think RS also has a fast 1A diode, can't remember the number. I think they also have some sort of 3A 100 or 200 volt diode as well. If you email me the requirements of the diode, I'm sure I could help you find the right choice.
