Pontica Grand Am 2000 - air conditioning problems?

A/C clutch won’t engage but is magnetized. Clutch coil is magnetized any time the blower fan is turned on. I checked the refrigerant and it's at the proper level. I can manually engage the clutch and it remains on until the car is turned off or the blower fan is turned off. Attempting to use the A/C on-off button inside the car does nothing.

I checked the diode and relay and both are working within the normal parameters. The only tests I have not completed yet is to bypass the PCM by connecting the clutch to the battery (need to make cable to test) and I haven't performed any kind of PCM check (I don't have the equipment).

If your coil magnetized means it gets electricity through your A/C system. which means it gets current through

1. Blower/Fan should be switched on in order to send signal to A/C compressor
2.A/C refrigerant pressure should sufficient
3.Thermostat should switched indicating more cooling is needed.

when these conditions satisfy there's a relay to engage and pass required voltage to

1. A/C compressor
2. Condenser / Auxiliary fan

you're getting some sort of current and magnet effect on your compressor because it gets some electricity so I assume your electric system is ok up to the relay.

it can be

the current passes through relay is not sufficient. check this.

if its sufficient

check the health of the coil resides below the compressor clutch which generates the magnetic field.

if coil is good and it provides enough magnetic effect

check for healthiness of your compressor clutch whether it can properly grip the pulley.

mind you it can be as simple as loosen bolt which holds the a/c compressor clutch securely in place.
