Diode Relay Coil

What could be the cause of short circuiting of freewheeling diode across a DC electromagnetic Relay?
A diode is connected across a coil of a 110VDC realay in a PLC based control circiut in a Gas Turbine control . Diode found short leading to failure of 110VDC control supply
Most likely the diode specs were exceeded, either in the peak inverse voltage or maximum current. If the diode was selected "casually", a "just pick one and put it in" sort of approach, this is the likely situation. Don't sweat the math, just try a much bigger diode. They are cheap.

Electronic Specialties EL190 OfftheCar Relay Tester $67.01 Quick offthecar relay tester. Checks relay coil and switch contacts. Fails bad relays. Automatic test with Good/Bad indication. Relay Buddy is a quick go / nogo tester for the most common automotive relays. It provides you with an indication of the general health and functioning of the relay switch contacts and coil. Relay Buddy will check the control side of the relay by applying a signal to the relay coil while it checks for proper functioning of the relay contacts. Relay Buddy operates the relay several times during each test session as it watches for consistency in every cycle. Relay Buddy will fail the relay and light the RED LED if any one of the cycles proves unsuccessful during the test session Specs. Settable to 4 and 5 pin relay. Switch contact are loaded to detect excessive resistance. Uses vehicle 12V battery for power. Green Light if relay is good Red Light if relay is bad. |

SG energizer-selfrunner with piggy-Back coil
How do I close a circuit with a Basic Stamp (from Parallax) chip.?
I'm trying to control another device that already is setup for remote operation (a camera). It has a remote 2 button switch. I would like to use my basic stamp and close the switch by perhaps using a relay, engergizing the coils to close the switch and make the contact instead of the button switch on the remote. Is this the right way to do this? If so do I need a diode inline with the relay on both sides?
I don't think that there is much voltage going though, but I'm unfamiliar with how I'd have to use a transistor to connect it. Would I have to "saturate" the transistor so it would have the camera's pin go high? It just seemed easier to use a mechanical relay that's the only reason I picked it.
If you use a relay you will need a diode across the coil in the oposite direction of current. Why not use a transistor as a switch. see how much current flows through the switch when it is closed.
