Surface Mounted Diode Replacement?
Can a surface mounted diode be replace with a regular one?
D1, an over-voltage protection diode on my guitar effects pedal got fried. Brought it to a local electronics shop and they soldered a diode on top of the busted surface mounted one. It worked. Got the pedal running.
I was told by the company who makes the pedal that it might only be a temporary fix and may cause further damage if the soldered diode fries. This worries me.
Any thoughts on this?
This is a temporary fix only. The original diode that failed open circuit may later start to conduct, goobering your circuit. The proper fix is to remove both diodes, and replace the surface mount diode with the correct part. The easiest way to remove a surface mount diode is just to use two soldering irons, one on each end, but there are other acceptable methods. The important thing is not to damage the circuit board.

HDD fried and it's a Seagate 7200.11 model, would swapping PCB work?
As many of you may have heard that the Seagate 7200.11 models are biting the dust with their crappy firmware bricking rendering the drive inoperable. I have a Seagate 1TB ST31000340AS model hard disk and not only did it brick, but it fried as well. The PCB smells of fried metal and noticed that the protection diode is fried on the bottom of the PCB, so it's a double whammy. I've read time and time again that swapping out the same model and firmware number PCB would fix the drive and make it operable again, would this instance work, and would I have to upgrade to firmware revision SD1A as soon as it works?
Absolutely as long as the platters have no physical damage then you can rebuild it from the PCB up. Is it worth it "depends on what you have stored on it" But if you want data retrieval then yes it can be done.
