Diode Protection
Can I use a reed relay without diode protection? Does the polarity matter?
I need a relay that can be used either way around, ie the voltage might be +12v one time then -12v the next time. I was thinking about using a reed relay for this, would it work? On regular relays they need diode protection otherwise they damage the IC they are used with, do reed relays need this?
If reed relays are no good can you suggest any other components that will work. Thanks.
You can protect your electronics by using two zener diodes connected in opposite directions. (i.e. Cathode to Cathode)
These two diodes in series are attached in parallel across the relay coil
For either polarity of DC applied one of the diodes will be forward biased and the other reverse biased. Conduction will not ocurr until voltage rises above the zener breakdown.
So if you use 18V zeners the voltage will be clamped at 18V + 0.7v = 18.7V The .7 is from the forward biased diode.
You will have to select the proper zener diode voltage for your circuit.
