Diode Power What type of diode should I use on a small rc car?
Im converting a rc car (about 1 1/2 feet long by a little less then a foot) to use solar energy. Im using a 12 volt solar panel for the power what type of diode should I use??? please help

Why do you think you need a diode? The solar array simply takes the place of the battery, right?. The only reason why you might use a diode is to prevent a problem if you hooked up the solar panel backwards which would prevent the electronics in the car from being energized with the wrong polarity. A diode is simply an electrical check valve, allowing current flow in only one direction. If your 12v panel is commercially made, it will already have (or SHOULD have) an internal series resistor to act as a load if you short circuit the output and a series diode to prevent reverse flow of power from a battery back into the array. Reverse polarity from a battery will destroy a solar cell, which is why it should already HAVE a diode built-in. Likewise with the load limiting resistor, as solar cells react poorly when short circuited, damaging themselves.
You mention motorhome diodes... These are used when placing car batteries in parallel to prevent one battery from discharging into another as if it were another load.The diodes steer the power so you do not run down the battery used for starting with your electrical things, but rather use the 2nd battery not used for the starter. Are you placing the solar cells in parallel with the internal battery to charge the battery? If so, you need a voltage regulator circuit that will correctly limit the charging current to what the battery requires. Overcharging a battery is cause for damage and shortening of the useful life of the battery.

Regulated Power Supply
Based on the type of output, power supplies can be classified as regulated and unregulated. In a regulated power supply, the voltage remains constant regardless of the load. The term ‘regulation' implies the ability of power supplies to maintain an output voltage that remains within a specified tolerance level as referenced to the changing conditions of the input voltage.
An ideal regulated power supply would be an electronic circuit that is designed for providing a predetermined DC voltage. On the contrary, an unregulated power supply will have higher outputs than stated. These types of outputs are normally used in equipments having their own internal regulation circuitry.
Reasons for Using Regulated Power Supply
A higher than recommended voltage may have a damaging impact on the equipment. To save your equipment from such damages, always choose a regulated supply of power. A regulated power supply is suitable to any application due to the following flaws in the unregulated power supply:

The DC output voltage also varies with variation in the AC input voltage.
Due to the use of semiconductor devices, there is a variation in the DC output voltage with change in the temperature.
Using the Zener Diode to Attain Regulated Power Supply
A common method of attaining regulated supply is to use a Zener diode in the circuit. The shortcomings of an unregulated power supply can be overcome by the use of this diode. The Zener diode is different from the normal diode as it facilitates the flow of current also in the reverse direction if the voltage is greater than the breakdown voltage.
The device can be connected in parallel with the source of voltage which is variable. When the reveres biasness is achieved, the Zener diode is called a shunt voltage regulator. Alternatively, they can be used in series with the base-emitter junction. A DC error amplifier that is used in a stabilized power supply can be cited as an example of this case.
