I just noticed on my car trunk light bulb (Honda S2000) there is a 1N4001 rectifier diode. The anode is on the +12v power from fuse box and the cathode side is connected to the light bulbs positive end. I know diodes are used to prevent reverse voltage going back, but is this really necessary? It seems like it's overkill for a small half-inch trunk light bulb. Are these diodes everywhere on lightbulbs to prevent voltage going back to the source?

I hve never seen a diode in an automobile light circuit, so I'd say no to "Are these diodes everywhere on lightbulbs..."
Perhaps a possibility is that the trunk light switch is also connected to an alarm or some other monitoring device (like a door open warning or something) in parallel with other door switches and the diode is to prevent the dome light from coming on when you open the trunk (or vise versa)? However, for this to work the diode would be in the wire to the alarm (or whatever) , but with wires running into hidden locations it might be hard to tell exactly what goes where.
I'm kind of guessing here, it would help to see a wiring diagram
