Diode Light Strips
What is the best way to connect multiple electrical wires to one?
I am working on a small home project where I have anywhere from 6-10 small light sources (LEDs) that need to be connected to one larger gauge wire. These LEDs are connected in parallel and have 22 gauge wires coming from the diode. I basically want to know the best method to connect these together. Hopefully something easy, secure, and insulated.
I have already tried wire nuts but these give mixed results on reliability. I am decent to below average at soldering and am not sure if I will be able to solder these wires together in one large lump because I haven't had too much success in the past with multiple wires. I also have tried searching for other options but didn't see anything too viable. I was thinking a metal strip with multiple holes in it would be much easier to solder but would like something insulated if this is the case.

Hi hummerpj: You can use what are called Beanies. These are small wire connectors & look like a one inch long sleeve with metal fingers inside.You put wires in the Beanie & squeeze with long nose pliers. That's it.These are used in alarm & telephone work.If all your leds are the same voltage & current you can wire them in series, plus in minus out to next plus & so on.Or in parallel, all pluses together & all minuses together.You can get other types of similar connectors at Radio Shack or hardware stores. How can I attach a Surface mounted Light Emitting Diode to my circuit.?
The SMD looks like it has a plastic strip on the back? I can't see any obvious connections. Can someone help please?
A surface mount LED has two electrical connections on the device and the polarity of the device matters (current must flow in a forward direction through the LED diode). Try downloading a datasheet for the diode you have purchased from the manufacturers website. Look at the picture on the datasheet to determine which terminal is the anode (+) terminal and which is the cathode (-) terminal. You have to solder the LED to the circuit board using the correct orientation with the anode supplied positive voltage when the LED is energized.
Surface mount devices are very small and genuinely difficult to solder. Special soldering devices like electric tweezers are very helpful in attaching tiny surface mount devices. Toaster Ovens also can be used to attach surface mount devices. Conventional lead type solders are being phased out but are a little easier to use than non-lead solders because the melting temperature of lead based solders is lower and easier to generate for an amateur electronic hobbyist.
