What has happened to the great car design of the nineties?
In general, I'd say that all cars - no matter what brand - have become uglier in this millenium. Some examples I can think of:
- Ford Ka, Fiesta and Focus - what a mess, they used to be perfectly shaped, now they're awful blobs;
- Renault Twingo, Clio and Megane - as above;
- Mercedes E-Class - did they really need to spoil the lines of it?
- Alfa Romeo Mito and the upcoming "149" - trying to be cute, way too hard;
- Citroen Xsara/C4 and Xantia/C6 - "weirdyfied" for the sake of it;
- Audis (most models) - massive grilles and LED diodes;
- BMWs (most models) - either a "face" like a squashed frog (Z4, 3 series) or bland overall. I used to love the looks of E46 and E39;
There are plenty more in addition to the above. As for the reasons for such a regress, I think the designers are pushed too hard to come up with something new and appeal to young people with "brand new" looks.
