guys i learnt from my friends that a protection diode can protect a transistor which has a Inductor or a relay at its collector... if a diode is places across the inductor,i think like this one in the image(diode D3) " http://images.elektroda.net/15_1274548562.jpg "
but the diode limits the voltage swing at the collector.
It(diode) will conduct electricity when the voltage across its terminals reaches a certain value.
and can u please tell me how can i know that from the datasheet(of a diode),the voltage value till it can conduct and if the voltage increases it will become open circuit to protect the transistor from high voltage damage...

any Silicon diode starts conducting at about 0.6 volts forward bias. In your example, it starts conducting when the collector rises to about 0.6 volts higher than the supply voltage.

For example, if the supply voltage is 12 volts, the diode prevents the collector from going above about 12.6 volts. This protects the transistor.

The datasheet will have a Vf for various currents. A common 1N4004, for example, has a Vf of 0.6 volts at 10mA increasing to 1.0 volts at 2 amps.

"if the voltage increases it will become open circuit to protect the transistor", makes no sense at all, sorry. As noted above, it becomes a short circuit (0.6 volts anyway, almost a short) and that protects the transistor, an open circuit will provide no protection at all.
