Aircraft alternator question?

In an aircraft alternator, it's the Diodes that rectify the generated AC current into DC, correct? Or is it the brush that rectifies? Or is the brush only used as a rectifier in a generator?
Ah ok! This clears it up! Thanks! And no, I'm not flying based on yahoo answers! My book can be confusing sometimes, so I need clarification!

The diodes block the reverse (negative) wave of the AC output, allowing only the positive cycle to pass thru to the electrical system.

An alternator replaces the commutator and brushes of a generator with slip rings, which transfer electricity but do not rectify the waveform.

(STEP 1) PPG-12V-200W-PMM How to make / build Free Energy Generator Plans: Blocking Diode

What is the difference between a blocking diode and a rectifier diode?

I have two diodes in the rotor of a generator that are rated 40a and 400v. I think they are rectifier diodes. I have seen identical bolt on diodes describes as blocking diodes taed 40a and 1200v.. Any reason that the 1200v ones won't do the job?

You have to understand how diodes work in order to understand the problem. Diodes allow flow of current only in one direction i.e. from P to N. If you supply AC power to the diode it will only allow half wave to go thru it and block the remaining half (so called rectification). Usually there are two diodes in a rectification circuit. Each diode blocks half wave but together they make a full wave.

So to answer your question there is no difference in a blocking diode and a rectifier diode it is just the way it is used in the circuit.

You can surely use the 40a, 1200v ones in place of 40a, 400v. But not the other way because if you use a 400v inplace of a 1200v it will probably burn the diode because it is not made to withstand that high voltage.

Also make sure you put the diode in the proper direction. If you put it in reverse it will block the current instead of rectifying it.
