Diode Clamper
What is the use of the capacitor in a diode clamper circuit?
I think that the circuit you have in mind has an ac source with a capacitor connected to its output, and a diode connected from the other end of the cap to ground. Assume that the diode has its anode grounded (i.e. it 'points' away from ground).
If the cap is initially discharged, immediately the circuit is switched on, the first negative-going cycle of the source will charge the cap with the terminal connected to the output becoming positive. The cap voltage rising to the peak value of the ac. Since the cap is unable to discharge through the diode, this positive voltage will thereafter be added to the ac source voltage as a constant dc value. The output of the circuit will now be unidirectional, rising to twice the original ac peak voltage, and with the negative peak of the original ac now at 0v.
In practice, if a resistive load is connected to the circuit, the cap will discharge into the load, but it will recharge on every negative-going cycle of the ac source. If the RC time constant is large compared with the period of the ac this leakage will have little effect.
The function of the cap is to act like a fixed voltage source which is added to the ac source so as to offset it by a fixed amount (the peak value of the ac) from ground.
