Diode Clamp
Can I do this with zener diodes?
I have an application which requires a regulated 100 volt 50 milliamp AC supply.
I have a 240 to 110 50mA adaptor which I want to use primarily for cost reasons.
Calculations indicate that in order to produce a zener clamp I require 2 x 100v 12 watt zeners which are unobtainable.
My question is this; Can 4 x 100v 3 watt zeners be connected in parallel to effectively produce a 12w zener or if I were to use 3 x 5 Watt zeners would it provide a safety margin or render the device less effective than 4 x 3 Watt zeners?

You cannot control an AC supply with a DC device.
Zeners work to clamp a smoothed/constant DC supply...
You are supplying a AC supply, that is both an alternating and varying supply.
You don't even get an 100v AC supply by clamping the top bit over 100v DC.
An AC is 100v RMS (root mean Squared.. it actually peaks at 1.44 over 100 anyway).
Being realistic, 10% on 100v (110v) is unlikely to be a big deal.
yes a little overrun, but within tolerance of normal 100v mains supplies.
but if it is 240 to 120 and you are really giving it 240 then yes, 120 is 20% over.
or did you mean a regulated DC supply ?
and no, you cannot just parallel up individual zeners...
as you have no way to guarentee the load balence between them.
each will have a slightly different 100v point.. and therefore the lowest will take all the current.

help settle an argument, will shorting the ends of jumper cables fry the diodes in an altenator? I say yes!?
an inlaw needed to jump the battery on his car and we hooked cables to my battery and then he was hooking them to his vehicle. When he clamped the ground I did not notice any idle change in my engine so I questioned whether he had made a good ground connection and before I knew it or could say anything he was arcing the two ends of the cables that were connected to my battery and I told him I sure hope you did not fry my diodes in my altenator and he just kind of laughed.
No, and I will tell you why, diodes have what is called a reverse bias capacity, for power diodes such as those used for the rectifier in an automotive circuit are very large and have a very high reverse bias. The Reverse bias is the voltage and current at which a diode hooked up to a current in the opposits of its proper flow will eventually degrade and become a conductor this is usually between 24 and 36 volts for low voltage diodes. On another note he still needs to not do this because it is extremely dangerous, car batteries when charging, vent hdrogen gas which is highly combustable also there stands a chance that he could accidentally weld the clamps together which would cause a the entire jumper set to get red and even possibly white hot, so is it dangerous, you bet yoru sweet coconuts it is, will it destroy your voltage regulator or diodes, probably not.
