Assume that the Zener is not there; then the voltage drop across the 1K resistor would be:

10/(1+0.5) ≅ 6.7V

But this above the breakdown voltage, so the real voltage drop across the resistor is set by the Zener and is equal to 5V.

But this means that the voltage drop in the other resistor is 5V ( = 10 - 5), so the current through it will be:

I = V/R = 5/0.5 = 10mA

And if I understood the circuit's topology correctly, this is the current drawn from the source.
