Device Laser I got a speeding ticket in Michigan; any info on the Radar/Laser MPH device?
In some states the trooper must renew a license to operate the radar gun. My understanding is that- in Michigan- the troopers use a laser detector or something. Does anyone know if the laser device requires a license? Sometimes if the cop's license has not been renewed the ticket gets thrown out. Any advice? Thanks.
You can ask them for a copy of the calibration paperwork for that piece of equipment. If the calibration date is expired, the
ticket is dismissed. The equipment must be calibrated at
certain intervals. My next door neighbor is a State Trooper
here on the east coast.

How powerful must a laser be to ionize air?
It needs to ionize a path about half a foot long. The laser's beam width needs to be about 1/3mm. What type of laser (chemical, gas, solid-state, etc.) would do this the most efficiently, and how much power would it require? The laser (the device itself) also needs to be as small as possible.
The real answer is forget about it.
To get an approximate numerical answer:
1. Decide the pressure of the air - atmospheric or less?
2. Decide just how ionized you want it to be - every molecule? one in 10?
3. Compute just how many nitrogen molecules you are going to want to ionize. (volume of air x air pressure, etc.)
4. Determine the minimum energy required to remove the computed number of electrons. You can assume 1402.3 kJ/mol = 335.48 Kcal/mol of energy per mole of electrons.

If you insist on ionizing the oxygen as well, add in the ionization cost of those electrons at 1313.9 kJ/mol = 314.33 Kcal/mol

5. Now let's take a guess at the efficiency with which a laser can hit these atoms. I'm sure 10% would be high; I don't know about 1%. If we assume 10%, then we need 10X the energy from step 4 out of the laser.
As for power, how long can you keep the air molecules in place? If the air is enclosed, you can ionize it gradually, but otherwise, otherwise. So compute your output power requirements accordingly.
6. Then there is the power into the laser. If it is going to kick the electrons out of the atom completely, and not just to a higher state, the photons will have to have rather high energies. (You can compute the exact frequency and wavelength from:
energy per photon = Planck's constant x frequency
Short wavelength (high energy photons) lasers are not very efficient. 1% would be high. So the input power needed would be at least 100 times the output power.
