Three Minutes or Less Episode 1 - CB Radio Crystal Diode Replacement
What does the diode do in a crystal radio?
Yes it rectifies the incoming signal. The reason you want to do this is that, first, you're listening to an AM (amplitude-modulated) signal, and second, if you just sent that signal to your speaker you'd hear nothing because the signal is a variable-amplitude carrier wave whose frequency is way above the range of hearing. However the modulation (variation in amplitude) is what you want to hear. The way to extract the modulation is to rectify the signal, so instead of a carrier being symmetric about zero, it has a zero baseline and variable amplitude above the baseline. You can easily filter out the high-frequency (carrier frequency) part of that signal and what's left is the audio, which you can hear.
