Silicon Carbide $93.99 Silicon carbide (SiC), also known as carborundum, is a compound of silicon and carbon with a chemical formula SiC. It occurs in nature as the extremely rare mineral moissanite. Silicon carbide powder has been massproduced since 1893 for use as an abrasive. Grains of silicon carbide can be bonded together by sintering to form very hard ceramics which are widely used in applications requiring high endurance, such as car brakes and ceramic plates in bulletproof vests. Electronic applications of silicon carbide as light emitting diodes and detectors in early radios were first demonstrated around 1907, and nowadays SiC is widely used in hightemperature/highvoltage semiconductor electronics. Large single crystals of silicon carbide can be grown by the Lely method; they can be cut into gems known as synthetic moissanite. Silicon carbide with high surface area can be produced from SiO2 contained in plant material. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F. Silicon Carbide Biotechnology (Hardcover) $334.98 Silicon Carbide (SiC) is a wide-band-gap semiconductor biocompatible material that has the potential to advance advanced biomedical applications. SiC devices offer higher power densities and lower energy losses, enabling lighter, more compact and higher efficiency products for biocompatible and long-term in vivo applications ranging from heart stent coatings and bone implant scaffolds to neurological implants and sensors. The main problem facing the medical community today is the lack of biocompatible materials that are also capable of electronic operation. Such devices are currently implemented using silicon technology, which either has to be hermetically sealed so it cannot interact with the body or the material is only stable in vivo for short periods of time. For long term use (permanent implanted devices such as glucose sensors, brain-machine-interface devices, smart bone and organ implants) a more robust material that the body does not recognize and reject as a foreign (i.e., not organic) material is needed. Silicon Carbide has been proven to be just such a material and will open up a whole new host of fields by allowing the development of advanced biomedical devices never before possible for long-term use in vivo. This book provides not only the materials and biomedical engineering communities with a seminal reference book on SiC that they can use to further develop the technology, but to also provide a technology resource for medical doctors and practitioners who are hungry to identify and implement advanced engineering solutions to their everyday medical problems that currently lack long term, cost effective solutions. Discusses Silicon Carbide biomedical materials and technology in terms of their properties, processing, characterization, and application, in one book, from leading professionals and scientistsCritical assesses existing literature, patents and FDA approvals for clinical trials, enabling |

Nanostructured Silicon Carbide $106.74 Production of nanostructured materials is currently an active area of research. It has been shown that some mechanical properties, such as hardness and toughness, increase with decreasing grain size in some materials. These materials often have improved thermal, electrical, and optical properties. It has been demonstrated that the size of nanomaterials and the structure of the outer layers determine their mechanical, electrical, and optical properties. Manufacturing processes must produce nanosize materials of uniform dimensions and of strictly controlled surfaces to find practical applications. Ultimately, the structure of materials on the nanoscale is poorly understood. In this study, silicon carbide nanowires were produced reliably by two different methods: heating a mixture in an induction furnace for short times at different temperatures; and sintering separated precursors in a tube furnace for longer times at one temperature, while varying the precursors. The second method of production proved to be an excellent manufacturing process by which large quantities of pure SiC nanowires could be produced. The method is simple, easily reproduced, and relatively inexpensive. Author: Wallis, Kendra L. Amorphous Silicon Carbide for Mems Applications $141.79 This work describes the development of MEMS fabrication techniques for amorphous Silicon Carbide (aSiC). Mechanical and chemical characterization studies demonstrate the extensive applicability of aSiC to a wide variety of MEMS applications due its high Youngs modulus and chemical resistivity to most common MEMS etchants. Techniques for patterning aSiC have been also been developed in this work. Integration of aSiC based MEMS devices with Stereolithography is explored in this work and a method of integration of stereolithographic structures into MEMS devices with high alignment accuracy is described. The test case used in this work to demonstrate the applicability of aSiC to MEMS is a microscaled four point probe. The Diodes $93.99 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Diodes were a Canadian punk/new wave band formed in 1976. They released five albums: Diodes (1977), Released (1979), ActionReaction (1980), Survivors (1982), and Time/Damage Live 1978 (2010). One of the first Toronto bands playing that style of music, The Diodes helped foster the scene in the city. Along with manager Ralph Alfonso, The Diodes opened the first Canadian punk nightclub in 1977, called Crash n Burn, where many of the citys punk bands at that time played. The first band to play the club was The Nerves, on a double bill with The Diodes. The club was closed at the end of the summer of 1977 due to complaints by the Liberal Party of Ontario (the principal tenants of the building).
