Cadillac Alternator Diode Test
Car Battery Drain Problem?
I have a 2000 Cadillac Deville that drains the battery overnight. I had the battery tested and it is ok. I am now suspecting the alternator ( possibly the diodes ). Can I check this by pulling the alternator fuse and seeing if it still drains or do I have to remove the alternator.
Perform an Ignition Off Draw test using a Digital Multi Meter - anything over 0.100 to 0.150 amps of draw needs to be identified and repaired. Yes a bad alternator bridge diode can cause this but do the IOD test to locate the problem. If no excessive IOD there is most likely a bad cell in the battery - if the battery is charging at 14.4 with the engine running shut doun the engine and promptly remove the battery ground cable, check the voltage after 6-8 hours normal will be 12.6 or higher. 12.2 - 12.4 is weak and 10.8-11.2 or lower indicates a shorted cell.
