Bridge Rectifier Diode Shorts
Bridge Rectifier - shorted diode?
If any diode in a bridge rectifier is shorted for any reason (solder bridge, fused diode, etc.), what will happen to the other diodes when power is explain.
Is it fair to say....there will be no damage to the remaining diodes. 2 will conduct and 2 will be shorted out at both ends of the cycle?
With one diode shorted out, on one half-cycle you have a forward-biased diode across the power source. This will blow out that diode and overload the power source.

What im thinking is....
Im thinking there will be no damage to the remaining diodes when power is applied.
However, 2 other diodes will conduct and 2 will be shorted.
Nope. One diode shorted leaves the diode 'around the corner' connected right across the AC supply. This diode will either blow up or blow the line fuse if there is one.
Half the time, almost none of the current will go to the load and will instead be forced across the short and one diode.
It is probably easier to visualize this if you draw the bridge as two sets of series-connected diodes wired across the DC supply rails.
