two questions of law..in the uk?

if the law states that only white lights are to be shown to the front(with the exception of indicators of course) why do cars and trucks get away with showing other colours(blue red orange)i and several other motorists pulled over the other night for what we thought was a police car..it turned out to be a vectra with those little diode type lights on it,driven by a young street racer..and if its illegal not to have the correct size lettering and numbering on your number plate how come so many people get away with using italics/sanskrit lettering,or moving the letters/numbers to make a word,using the screw cover to complete it?they dont get stopped ..but i get stopped for a faulty light that failed DURING THE JOURNEY I WAS ON??

Just your luck. Standard Police officers only tend to go for traffic stuff when they're bored on a night shift, if there's nothing else going on, and they've no paperwork to do (which is rare). Sounds like you were the unlucky person who got stopped by Roads Policing (Traffic). It's their job to do it. I know if our Traffic lot saw any of the above, then they'd all have been stopped - believe me.

basically you need to calculate the energy of a photon of wavelenth 785 nm which you can do using the equation

E= h * f and c = f * w

h = planck's constant = 6.626 * 10^-34 Joule-sec
f= frequency
c=speed of light = 2.9979 * 10^8 m/s
w=wavelength

so, a photon of w=785nm

f= c/w = (2.9979*10^8 m/s) / (785 * 10^-9m) = 3.819 * 10^14 Hz

the energy of a photon with this frequency is

E = h * f = (6.626 * 10^-34 Joule-sec) * (3.819 * 10^14 Hz) =
E = 2.531 * 10^-19 J

to get the # of photons required to give 31Joules just:

# of photons = 31 Joules / (2.531 * 10^-19 J) =

# = 1.225 *10^20 photons
