How do you determine diode type?

I was looking at a friend's AC/DC power adapter (wall wart) that wasn't putting out the correct votage or current. I cracked it open and noticed a diode that appeared to be chared, carbon all around it. Because of that I decided to pull out the diode to see if it's still working. During the extraction it broke. I don't know anything about diodes except for the basics of how they work.

The board has a diode diagram printed at that spot, it's generic (anode-triangle-bar-cathode).

The broken diode is mostly intact, but in two pieces. Can I figure out what to replace it with? (and for the record... the internal fuse is fine)

If it matters it's from a linksys power adapter AD5/2.5C (5 V 2.5A). I know that doesn't really matter because NO ONE cracks these things open...

Funny thing is a new router would cost less than the power adapter!

If it's the Linksys power adapter that I have had the misfortune to experience, then the diode is not all that is bad. My experience is that the power adapter is overated and can't deliver 2.5A into the Linksys router with which it came. I have two installations.

The best solution for me was to buy a suplus power 5V 3A power adapter and splice the original plug onto it. I've done this twice and the system has worked fine for three years.

To answer your question, the a silicon diode would be sufficient and needs to have a PIV (peak inverse voltage) rating greater than twice the peak voltage that the internal transformer can deliver. An amperage rating double the design output should be sufficient.
