How to build a timer which alternately flashes two sets (5 and 3) red LEDs and is variable to 80 flash/sec?

and have this coupleable to a controller which adjusts flash rate or pattern of the alternating 5 - 3 diode set. I am using a 12 volt premade automotive LED bulb. The two positive contacts on the bottom of the bulb power the two sets of LEDs. I want to figure out how to power the two sets alternately and to control the total flash rate accurately up to 80 fps by a computer. In a biofeedback set up recieving varius sensory inputs and using these according to a program adjust varius outputs such as this flasher. Manual over ride seamlessly too!

The parallel (printer) or serial port can be used to drive the LEDs through a transistor switch. You only need three wires from the port, two digital outs and a common/ground.

For a low side switch - each digital output from the port goes to a transistor like the 2N2222 used as a switch. Connect the transistor through a 22K resistor from the I/O pin to its base, its emitter to ground, its collector to the LED (-) and the LED (+) to +12V supply. The Power supply (-) is connected to ground/common also. See Transistor Low Side Switch in the second link. You may also need a 22k pullup resistor for some printer port pins. This goes from the I/O pin to +5V. I expect this detail will be in the link below.

It seems your lamp may be commoned (-12V) on the socket case, with the +12V goes to either of the pins, and the -12V to the socket case. This needs additional components to make a high side switch. The circuit in the diagram in the second link is not suitable. The diagram in the third link shows the conceptual difference between high and low side switches. However this is not directly suitable. Make it a P channel FET, connect the low side switch described above to the gate, and a resitor (10K) from the gate to +12V. You can use a PNP transistor for the switch too. Add a 10K resistor in series with the base. The emitter goes to +12V.

I don't know what software you are using, but I have used VB6 and Windows XP with a 32 bit parallel port DLL to send bits to the parallel port. I expect you can find a driver on the internet that provides a DLL to get access to the parallel port which is likely to be faster. I have used this method, but not with Vista. See the first link below.

With a serial port use RTS (pin 7) and the DTR (pin 4) lines. These can be accessed through the properties of the serial com port object in VB. I have used this method too.

If your computer doesn't have these ports you are looking at buying a serial or LPT card (if you have suitable bus sockets inside) or USB adaptors for serial or LPT port.

I have used USB/serial adaptors and found sometimes rapid command sequences don't work as expected, turning up out of sequence, but it does depend a little on the software, using statements like "do events" may help. VB.net I don't know. The problem is that windows PCs have moved away from these simple things in hardware and software. There are risks with USB adaptors that they are too slow because it is very messy software wise.

If these methods don't work for you, buy a Data Acquisition System (DAS) or I/O module, with digital I/O, as you seem to need one anyway, to get the sensory inputs. You can buy cards/modules that work off internal bus or USB. These have analogue inputs, timers and digital I/O port for what you need. They also have software drivers - make sure the drivers will work with whatever software you use for software development. Most use a DLL software interface with function calls.

I think this is enough for now. You need to ask more questions once you have determined what to do. This is as much a software issue as a hardware one, but you could always go back to an older computer and operating system and software development system if you have one lying around. Windows XP with VB6 and serial ports and parallel ports will work fine. Modern PCs have no bus, only USB, unless you buy more expensive industrial or server types.

Seamless manual override - that is best done by software and a virtual slider or something on screen. If you want a hardware knob it would be read as an analogue input through the software. If it is to be independant of software??? Gets expensive no end.

Edit:
Added a link showing circuit of high and low side switches. Search on the page for "Switch a 1 A, 10 V Load That Always Stays Connected to Ground".

Mazda Tail Lights

Mazda is a Japanese automotive manufacturer based in Hiroshima, Japan. Mazda at first started as the Toyo Cork Kogyo Co., Ltd, established in Japan in 1920. The company formally came into existence as Mazda name in 1984. In 1970’s Mazda officially entered the North American market. It started with 7-percent financial stake, in early 1979 entering into a partnership with Ford, Mazda resulted in various joint projects. The name stands for outstanding value, uncompromising value and exhilarating driving experiencing. The first Mazda vehicles arrived in USA back in 1970.Its the same way today it has continued to gain reputation as a leader in the industry with loyal repeat customers. It continued the introduction of legendary vehicles like RX-7 and MX-5 Miata. Since car has come into existence as means of transport lot of importance is given to its performance. In early days attention was paid to its style and now days its parts are paid more attention as it enhances its style and value. Now a day’s component that is largely associated with car performance must look good. Tail lights also performed but they were simple engineering products with just a couple of bulbs. Over the years the functionality of tail lights has improved a lot with more complex function in a better way. Nowadays part of the style statement is often a cutting edge high tech look. Mazda tail lights are now one of the most important components that determine and state the cars look, style and attitude. A redesigned symbol was introduced in 1997; it is a stylized "M" which means to show Mazda stretching its wings for the future. The symbol is also represents a tulip. Since 2000, Mazda has used the phrase "Zoom-Zoom" which describes what it calls the "emotion of motion" that it claims is inherent in its cars.

The tail lights are the small red lights installed at the rear end of your car, usually mounted near the corners of the vehicle’s rear body panel. Its major function is to keep your vehicle’s rear illuminated at night, giving a clear visibility to the other drivers. The tail lights have no use at daytime or on streets flooded with lights but are essential when driving in a poorly lit highway. The various types of tail lights are as follows-, Smoked LED tail lights, Euro LED tail lights, Black Chrome LED tail lights and LED tail lights... The biggest advantage of using LED tail is that it doesn’t burn out and uses less power to illuminate. It gives a striking look and best far visibility range better than other lights. LED tail lights are made up of the latest bulb technology. Mazda euro tail lights are also referred to as Mazda altezza tail lights, Mazda clear tail lights, or simply Mazda tail lights. Another new trend for people is to get custom Mazda LED tail lights, which are a type of euro tail lights that use LED bulbs. The Mazda LED tail light can be recognized as it has a sea of small LED bulbs lighting up instead of one large lens lightening up.

Mazda tail lights inexpensively changes the look of the car with more durable and energy efficient Tail Lights. These Light Emitting Diodes, last much longer, are more robust than normal bulb, and shine more brightly. LED taillights will give an air of luxury to the ride. LED tail lights are considered to be the waves of the future.
LED's (light emitting diodes) give more durability than any conventional type tail light, it increases light output and reacts faster as compared to others.  LED's are well engineered with complete kits that combine easy plug .LED tail lights are a direct replacement to your outdated factory OEM tail light. To keep Mazda safe at all times, the company provides with high performance Mazda tail lights. Every Mazda vehicle is equipped with a complete set of auto lights to keep the vehicle safe at night. And just as the major lights of Mazda are important, so are the smaller lights like the tail lights.
