Antenna Diodes
crystal radios and op amps?
i built a crystal radio and it's great. it works. i get stations-a-plenty! it's a plain old run-of-the-mill radio. long antenna, good ground, Ge diode detector. all the stuff. i want to add an op amp just for some, well, amplification. like the one seen here:

my question is, can i tie the ground in with the -9v from the battery and do away with my "cold water pipe connection"?
No, you still need the good ground. The opamp does not change that, it only works with the audio signal.

Can a 75 - 300 ohm TV transformer be used backwards as a 300 - 75 ohm transformer for a UHF bow tie antenna?
I made a home made 4 bow UHF antenna (just experimenting) and am about to hook it up. Will the transformer work either way or is it limited to one direction (as a step down transformer). Ist it just basically a wire wound transformer with no diodes?
Do I even need a transformer to bring in UHF channels?
The transformers work either way.
The frequency band (VHF or UHF) is not the reason you need the transformer. The transformer is needed to match the impedance of the antenna to the input of the receiver. Matched impedances will eliminate reflections and pass the most signal.
