what is the process to charge the air with ions?

I just bought a oscillating fan with ionizer and i was wondering what process is the air going through to put ions in the air.

ionizers are pretty cool technology...the actual process is electricly adding a charge to the air by means of traveling between charged plates. if you ever notice whenb there is a thunderstorm the air will smell crisp and clean. its a electronic filterization process. iv also seen thoes ones that give a positive charge and run past a negitively charged dome... the positivly charged particles ( dust, skin,hair) stick to the negitive panel like a magnet cause that is basicly what the concept is! the whole process taked very little power and really does a nifty trick for air purifying, plus you gotta love not having to deal with paper type air filters that have to be changed. enjoy they work great with just about any oder smoke or musty smell that air freshners cant touch.
