who knows about laser pointers?

I wanna buy a green beam laser pointer that is strong enough to go about 3 miles, but when i went to ebay to look at how much they are, it said something about 5mW 532nm. What the heck does that mean? can anyone help me out?

You might get 3 miles out of the pointer you're considering if conditions are perfect. 5mW refers to the amount of power in the beam - in this case 5/1000 of a watt. The other number is the wavelength of the light. 532 nanometers is just a scientific way to say "green".

Can you see the beam of a green laser?

i just bough a 5mw green laser with a 532nm will i be able to see the beam also does it user regular batteries or alkaline batteries thx 5mw

You will not be able to see the beam in clean, dry air. Of any laser -- the beam is invisible, just like any other beam of light is invisible (flashlight, sunlight, headlight, etc.) The only way to see any beam is for it to hit something - dust, smoke, steam, fog -- and scatter some of the light. Whenever you see a laser beam, someone has generated smoke or fog in order to make it visible.

At 5mW it will most likely use lithium batteries.

5mW can permanently damage your eye VERY quickly!
