Is my laser diode burnt out?

I spent 40 dollars buying a 200mw diode or the maglight laser burner kipkay project and although i had heard that it's a bad idea to use a laser without a driver, kipkay said you should test the naked diode with two AA batteries. I tested it with two AAA batters (which i think just makes it safer) and my pins were kind of close together. At first it got kind of hot and dim so i let it cool down. Then, it was working again but a second later i see a little spark and now it's not working, no dim light, no red led effect, nothing. Please help and is there any possible way to get this working or anything i did wrong? If i don't get this working i am going to be a very, very sad panda ):

Yes, I think you burned it out. Even though you only used 2 small batteries, they can still put out several amps of current if given the chance. You should have put a resistor in series with them to limit the current to an amount that the laser diode could use. It's completely fried I'm afraid.

Basic principles of LED (Light Emitting Diodes)
