Cat 5 (Category 5 cable) is the type of wire/cable used for Ethernet (100base-T)
It is made from 4 pairs of copper wire (8 all together) that are twisted together. The twisting helps protect the data from interference and noise. Cat 5 cables can be up to 100 meters long
RJ-45 is the type of plug.
Cat 5 is twisted copper cable (not fiber optic). The RJ-45 connectors are used to plug the cable into the computer/router/etc.
Analog telephones use RJ-11 connections which look like smaller versions of RJ-45

The fibre optic cable that is connected to my cable modem has its rubbery-like outer layer shredded a little bit..its nothing serious..not much of a damage. I can see the metalic wires inside the rubbery vulcanic outer layer. The cut looks small and its about the size of the edge of a USA quarter coin. I was wondering..will this effect my net speed and make me suffer any bandwidth loss since this is my Fibre Optic Cable wire I am talking about? Please reply fast, I hope this is nothing too serious or anything!
If you are using fibre optic cable then there are no wires inside the cable, you could see the reflective covering around the fibre or the fibre itself, although the fibre is very small. Whether you have a problem depends upon whether it was simply the outer rubber-like outer shield or if you actually damaged the cladding inside. It is possible that you will get degradation of service if it is worn too much.

Okay, just about everyone has a red laser pointer. Heck, we even sell a fine one here at ThinkGeek. But, we're pretty sure you want to be a superior geek - and doing it with a green laser is the way to go.
